Most Bali itineraries stay at sea level. Beach clubs, surf, sunset drinks, then traffic home. About ninety minutes north of the coast there is a different version of the island, and it begins with cold air over a volcanic caldera.
Kintamani sits in the highlands of Bangli Regency, wrapped around Mount Batur and the lake that shares its name. It is the place people photograph at dawn and leave by mid-morning. Kintamani as a base, not a stopover
Staying overnight turns long day trips into easy mornings. Lake Batur and its volcanic hot springs sit below the villa. The Batur trek departs before dawn. Local coffee and citrus plantations offer tastings on working farms.
Ubud stays in reach too: Tegallalang Rice Terrace, Ubud Palace, and the Monkey Forest are all drivable from Omara, so guests can spend a morning in the highlands and an afternoon in town.
Before you book
Bring layers. Kintamani sits at roughly 1,500 metres, and evenings drop to around 15 to 18 degrees Celsius.
Arrive in daylight. The drive is about two to two and a half hours from the airport, and highland roads are winding and poorly lit after dark.
Stay two nights. One night usually means arriving late and leaving early, which returns you to the day trip you were trying to avoid.
A quieter side of Bali
